Pre-school at Poppins

Continuing in our child initiated approach from the toddler room we additionally begin to prepare children for their next journey into primary school. Confidence and security in their own independence is key in ensuring the transition from nursery to school is a positive one. We use many activities to promote confidence and self-awareness such as our ‘marvellous me’ box, our ‘star board’ and ‘circle time’. Encouraging independence in self-care, such as fine motor skills required to fasten your own zip, is also something we refine in pre-school.

At Poppins we feel it is important to recognise and acknowledge good behaviour and gestures, children enjoy making the right choices and we praise them in doing so. In pre-school we reinforce good behaviour using our ‘rocket’, again this is a system which many schools use making the transition in the future easier.

We further prepare children by introducing knowledge of numbers, shape and the introduction of phonics and letter formation. ‘Jolly Phonics’ is our phonic scheme in pre-school. This is implemented by our qualified Early Years teacher. We have many resources, such as our self-registration that encourages name recognition leading to the writing of their name when they are ready. Pre-school is very lucky to have an Early Years Teacher working all year round implementing the planning and delivery of the Early Years Curriculum (EYFS) ensuring your child is ready and raring to go when the time comes to go to ‘big school’.

We are registered by OFSTED to offer the Nursery Education Grant for 3 and 4 year olds.
